How it works

Dividend yield is calculated as: Yield (%) = (Annual Dividend per Share ÷ Share Price) × 100.

Annual income is calculated by multiplying the dividend per share by the number of shares held. Monthly income divides the annual figure by 12. Yield fluctuates as the share price moves — a falling share price raises the yield, which is why very high yields can sometimes signal risk rather than opportunity.

Practical example

A stock priced at 45.00 paying an annual dividend of 1.80 per share: Yield = (1.80 ÷ 45.00) × 100 = 4.0%.

Holding 200 shares generates 360 per year or 30 per month in dividend income. If the share price drops to 36.00, the yield rises to 5.0% — illustrating why yield and price move inversely.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good dividend yield?

There is no universal answer. Yields of 3–5% are considered solid for established companies. Above 7–8% can indicate elevated risk or a falling share price. Always assess payout sustainability alongside the yield number.

Is dividend yield the same as total return?

No. Total return includes capital gains (share price appreciation) plus dividends. Yield measures only the dividend income relative to price.

Does the calculator account for taxes?

No. Dividend income is taxable in most jurisdictions. Your net income after tax will depend on your personal tax rate and any applicable allowances.

What is the difference between dividend yield and dividend payout ratio?

Yield compares the dividend to the share price. Payout ratio compares the dividend to the company's earnings per share — it indicates how much of earnings are returned to shareholders.

How often are dividends paid?

This varies by company and country. UK companies typically pay twice a year, US companies quarterly, and some pay monthly. Check the company's investor relations page for its dividend schedule.
