How it works

Reading time is calculated as: Minutes = Word Count ÷ Words Per Minute. The average adult reads silently at 200–250 WPM for general content. Academic or technical material is typically read more slowly (150–180 WPM).

If you paste text directly, the calculator counts words by splitting on whitespace. The result is displayed in minutes and seconds. For content over an hour, it also shows hours and minutes.

Practical example

A 1,500-word blog post at an average reading speed of 238 WPM: 1,500 ÷ 238 ≈ 6 minutes and 18 seconds.

A 10,000-word academic paper at a slower speed of 180 WPM: 10,000 ÷ 180 ≈ 55 minutes and 33 seconds. Useful for writers deciding whether to split long articles into multiple posts.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average adult reading speed?

Research consistently places the average adult silent reading speed at around 200–250 WPM for general prose. The figure often cited is 238 WPM. Technical content, legal text, and academic papers are typically read at 150–180 WPM.

How do I find the word count of my article?

In Microsoft Word or Google Docs, the word count is shown in the bottom status bar or under Tools > Word Count. For web content, paste the text into the field below and the calculator will count it for you.

Why do blog platforms show different reading times?

Different platforms use different WPM baselines. Medium uses 265 WPM, while others use 200 or 250. The difference of a minute or two is unlikely to affect reader decisions.

Does reading time include looking at images?

This calculator covers text only. A common convention for image-heavy content is to add 10–12 seconds per image.

Should I display reading time on my blog posts?

Yes — studies show that displaying reading time increases click-through rates because readers can commit knowing the time investment upfront. It is especially valuable for long-form content.
